Remembrance Day

Michael VanHoek, 64, paying his respects on Remembrance Day. His parents are from Holland and were teens during the First World War, without them he wouldn’t be in Canada today. He would usually attend the ceremony as in past years.

Celebration Square, which usually holds the Remembrance Day ceremony, is barren due to COVID-19 restrictions. Peel district currently has the highest amount of COVID-19 cases in Canada.

Robert Stanczyk, historical interpreter for museums at the city of Mississauga says, “COVID-19 kept people coming at a steady pace. But, in a non-COVID world, a lot of people would be coming, especially today, on Remembrance Day.”
